BUCHANAN — Police are still working to positively identify a person found dead inside a burned mobile home Saturday evening in Buchanan.

Mike Dawson, commander of the Michigan State Police Niles Post, said police believe they know who was inside the mobile home, but must wait to release the name pending an autopsy.

“We don’t want to misidentify someone,” he said. “That is one of the biggest things we are working on now.”

Police are also trying to determine what led up to Saturday’s bizarre and dangerous situation.

It began around 10:30 p.m., when several people reported hearing gunshots coming from within Lot 76 at the Riverside Estates mobile home park, located at 14566 North Redbud Trail.

When officers arrived, Dawson said they heard shots coming from the trailer that were hitting the ground and surround mobile homes.

Gunshots continued, Dawson said, as police set up a perimeter around the mobile home for about 10 minutes. Dawson said officers never saw the person shooting and could not determine if any shots were being fired in their direction.

Police later counted 17 rounds that hit other structures during the incident, but Dawson believes many more shots were fired. Dawson said the officers did not fire any.

At some point, police noticed smoke coming from the trailer and heard one last gunshot, which Dawson said might have been the suspect taking his own life. However, Dawson said they are not releasing the cause of death until results come back from the autopsy.

The mobile home became engulfed in fire quickly and firefighters were unable to immediately approach because ammunition was exploding from inside the structure.

“Ammo was going off like crazy,” Dawson said.

Once the fire was controlled, the trailer was entered and fire personnel located one dead person and a dead dog. Evidence of handgun, rifle and shotgun ammo was also found inside the structure.

Dawson said police are still working to determine what might have caused all of this to happen.

“Nobody has been able to provide that information yet,” he said.

No one was injured except the person found dead in the trailer.

Dawson said police hope to release more information either Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning.
