Herbert Edward West, 82, of Dowagiac, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Jan. 15, 2015, at his home in Dowagiac surrounded by his loving family.

Cremation will take place but no memorial service is planned. Memorials may be made to Heartland Enriching Life Hospice and/or the Veterans Hospital in Battle Creek. Those wishing to leave a memory or condolence of Herb online may do so at www.clarkch.com.

Herb was born Dec. 23, 1932, in Three Oaks, Michigan to Clarence and Pearl (Morrison) West. He married Harriette Etter on April 7th, 1956, in Decatur at the First Church of God. He was a lifelong resident of Dowagiac and owned Herb’s Car Care. He also worked at Buchanan Industries. Herb proudly served in the United States Airforce during Korea. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and Eagles of Dowagiac. Herb loved his family and idolized his grandchildren. For over fifteen years he raised many foster children and helped them on the right path.

Herb is survived by his loving wife, Harriette; by his children, Dawn (Dale) Killarney, Lee (Gail) West, Vicki (Larry) Ausra and a daughter-in-law, Norma Northrup, all of Dowagiac. He is also survived by 1 brother and 3 sisters; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Robert Northrup; grandchildren, Darla Northrup and Joey Ausra; and three brothers. Clark Chapel & Cremation Services of Dowagiac is serving the family.
