CASSOPOLIS — A boat launching plan designed by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Parks and Recreation Division for the east end of Eagle Lake in Ontwa Township was presented to the Cass County Road Commission Thursday for its permission to lease the water’s edge for the site.

No action was required Thursday as the presentation next goes to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality for approval.

The plan butts up to the channel that flows from Eagle Lake to Juno Lake at the site of the former Dock property, which is on the east side of the site plan.

The plan shows a parking lot designed to accommodate 16 vehicles with one designated for a county official and five for handicapped parking. A boat launch on the east end is large enough to accommodate up to 18-foot boats and just to the east of the launch is a designated area for swimmers.

There will also be a painted pedestrian walkway across Eagle Lake Road from the parking lot  to the water’s edge.

The plan shows no parking along Eagle Lake Road.

The road commission will review the plan and the lease request particularly safety exits on each side of the parking areas as noted by road engineer Joseph Bellina.

Chairman Leroy Krempec will walk the area with John Bossler, Ontwa Township supervisor, to review the proposal.

In other matters, manager Steve Lucas reported he is still working on a new mailbox replacement policy and will report on it in March. Lucas said he has talked to other county managers about large mailboxes and their safety requirements.

Board member Pete Fournier said he has received reports from citizens that snow removal was good for this season.

In a safety drawing for $25 gift certificates, winners were Dereck LaPorte, Joseph Bellina, Beth Middleton and Dereck Dussel.
