Sylvia A. Hand, 83, of Niles, passed away on Friday, Jan. 9, 2015 at Lakeland Community Hospital, Niles.

Sylvia was born on Dec. 16, 1931, to Harry and Hazel (Arnold) Jones in Tennessee. On March 20, 1949, she married Robert Hand at a ceremony in Buchanan, Michigan. She operated her own beauty salon and later worked for The University of Notre Dame where she retired in 1992. Sylvia did volunteer work, taught Sunday school and played the piano. She attended Huntly Memorial Baptist Church, Niles.
She is survived by her daughters, Brenda Britton of South Bend and Pennie Butterworth of Niles; brothers, Larry and Kenneth Jones; sister, Neva Hill; grandson, Roger (Hope) Janesheski of Niles and five great grandchildren; Simon, Christina, Chaylin, Nathan and Matthew.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Robert Hand and two sisters; Janice Watson and Harriett Henley
Funeral Services for Sylvia will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2015, at Huntly Memorial Baptist Church, 1139 Huntley Rd, Niles, Michigan with Roger Janesheski officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service from 2-3 p.m.
