A 23-year-old Dowagiac man is in custody following his arrest by officers with the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office on Friday, on suspicions of being involved in a domestic incident while armed with a knife.

According to authorities, the arrest came as police were investigating a domestic violence situation on the 92000 block of Center Street in Sister Lakes, which occurred around 3:20 p.m. on Jan. 2. The incident was called into police by a third party, who met with authorities at a nearby location, where it was relayed that the suspect had a knife on him during the fight.

During the conversation, the caller pointed out that the suspect and victim were driving past them as they spoke, in dark grey Dodge Neon. Deputies stopped the car without incident. During the stop, officers saw a mechanical switchblade lying on the floor of the vehicle.

Following the suspect’s arrest, police seized not only the blade inside the vehicle but also a kitchen knife inside the residence where the incident occurred.

The suspect, whose name is currently withheld by authorities pending his arraignment, is currently lodged in Van Buren County Jail for domestic assault, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of mechanical knife.
