Sheila K. Smiedendorf, 60, of Niles, died with her family gathered around at 1:45 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 26, 2014, at her home following an extended illness.

She was born on Aug. 12, 1954, in Niles to Robert Louis and Mary Louise (Teixeira) Curtis.

She was graduated from Brandywine High School, and received her C.N.A. from Southwestern Michigan College. She has lived in Niles all of her life and had been employed for several years in the offices of Paul V. Detrisac, M.D. She had a long career at the former Pawating Hospital (now Lakeland Community Hospital) where she was employed until her illness.

Sheila was a member of Saint Mark Catholic Church in Niles. She volunteered with the Red Cross Blood Bank, and enjoyed collecting everything associated with Coca-Cola. She is remembered for a great sense of humor, and always being interested in others, many of whom have received homemade gift baskets from Sheila. Her family was the greatest beneficiary of her caring and giving.

On Sept. 2, 1972, at Saint Mark Catholic Church she married Robert Dale Smiedendorf, with whom she celebrated this year the 42nd anniversary of their wedding.

Surviving family includes her husband, Robert and their daughter, Kelli Ann Smiedendorf of Muskegon; an adopted exchange student son, Nilo (Sabrine, M.D.) Barretto, M.D. of Brazil; Sheila’s sister, Barbara (Ronald) Satkoski of Niles; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents Mary Hull and Robert Curtis, and by two brothers, Robert Louis Curtis, Jr. and Richard Alan Hull.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Sheila Smiedendorf will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2014, at Saint Mark Catholic Church in Niles by The Rev. Thomas King, C.S.C. assisted by Brother Dennis Meyers, C.S.C. Committal Rites will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Osceola, Indiana.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 2 until 4 and 6 until 8 p.m. on Monday at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles. Contributions in memory of Sheila may be made to the Southwestern Michigan College Scholarship Fund for Brandywine Students.
