A local service organization is holding a special event this weekend to raise money for the family of a Niles boy battling cancer.

Money raised at the Niles Service League’s Christmas Crafts for Kids event will benefit the family of Bailey Bennett, a second-grade student at Howard Elementary School.

The event will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday in the gymnasium at Howard Elementary, which is located at 2788 Mannix St., Niles.

Admission is $8 per child.

Kids will be able to eat popcorn, jump in a bounce house and make Christmas crafts in a family-friendly environment.

“We do a lot of fundraisers for kids, but it almost always involves adults,” said Becky Kessler, of Niles Service League. “This way we get to do a fundraiser for kids, but the kids get to participate.”

Kessler said Niles Service League is happy to assist the Bennett family.

“It really warms our hearts to be able to help in any way that we can,” Kessler said. “Every little bit helps, so anyone that can give an extra dollar is appreciated.”

Since 1934, the Niles Service League has been providing assistance to children in the Brandywine, Buchanan and Niles school districts.

The organization will also be accepting donations of food, toys, blankets, boots and coats for its regular programs.
