The most exciting wrestling at Wednesday’s Wolverine Conference quad meet at Edwardsburg High School came in the final match at 285 pounds.

Edwardsburg freshman Steven Harris battled hard before falling to Vicksburg’s Andy Antal, 15-13. Antal’s three-point near fall with :16 left in the third period erased Harris’ 13-12 lead.

That was one of the few matches that the Eddies lost as Edwardsburg rolled past Plainwell, 66-3, and Vicksburg, 57-9.

“I’m excited because he’s competing hard,” said Edwardsburg wrestling coach Mike Higley about Harris’ performance against Vicksburg. “We’ve been going over in the room that it’s nice to win, but it’s not necessary.

I’m just looking for him to compete and work hard and look to score. We got that tonight.”

Edwardsburg won by forfeit 11 matches in the meet.

In the victory over Plainwell, Edwardsburg got pins from 140-pounder Dustin Vires, 152-pounder Austin Cline and 215-pounder Bo Thomas.

Recording pins for the Eddies against Vicksburg were 112-pounder Michael Higley, 160-pounder Joe Hess, 171 pounder Edward Mozader and 215-pounder Blake Parsons.

Higley, who placed seventh in the state as a freshman and fifth as a sophomore, improved his record to 7-1.

Coach Higley was happy with his squad’s overall performance.

“I’m excited because our kids are starting to compete a little harder,” the Eddies coach said. The first few weeks of practice and up at Allegan (last Saturday) we just didn’t compete hard enough.”
