It was over almost before it got started as visiting Buchanan used a 29-point first quarter to defeat rival Brandywine 67-31 in BCS Athletic Conference boys basketball Friday night.

Buchanan (2-0) hit 7-of-9 3-pointers in the opening eight minutes to outscored Brandywine (1-1) 29-9.

The Bobcats tried to claw their way back into the contest in the second quarter when Buchanan struggled to score, but were not able to make enough shots to make a serious run at the Bucks.

“It set the tone for the game, don’t ask me how it happened, but you match up on the tip and a guy gets a wide-open look for a three,” Brandywine coach Nathan Knapp said. “There was nobody within 10 feet of him. The next two trips down the court is was the same thing.

“It was just a rough start. I thought we missed our opportunity when we got them in foul trouble and their best two players had to go to the bench. We never capitalized on it.”

Knapp was referring to the Bucks being called for 12 of their 19 team fouls in the first half.

The Bobcats were only about to outscore Buchanan 10-8 in the second quarter, and as a result, were still down 18 points at halftime.

Buchanan played a better second half at both end of the court and cruised to the easy victory.

“Anytime you can shoot like that, it makes it tough on your opponent,” Buchanan coach Reid McBeth said. “Last the game we did not shoot the ball well, so it was nice to get off to a face start tonight and get that confidence going. Then we hit a dead spot, but I thought we shot the ball well in the second half.”

Tyler Flynn led the Bucks with a game-high 17 points. Dustin Gray finished with 10.

Austin Knapp led Brandywine with nine points. Andrew Duckett had five.
