The Dowagiac boys basketball team will kick off its season tonight when it hosts cross-county rival Cassopolis in a non-league contest.

Tip-off is set for 7:15 p.m.

Dowagiac, which was 11-10 last season, returns a wealth of talent.

Playing primarily sophomores last year, veteran Dowagiac coach Danum Hunt is hoping his team learned from last season’s experience.

“Over the course of the off-season, we’ve matured, we’ve gotten stronger and our bond as a team has grown a lot stronger.”

Dowagiac may be without the services of junior Keontae Blackamore tonight after sustaining a knee injury during practice.

Blackamore, who averaged 10 points, eight rebounds and two blocks per game last year, was scheduled to be examined by a doctor Monday.

Also back for the Chieftains is Brandon Winchester-Jones, who is starting his third season on the varsity squad.

Winchester-Jones averaged 17.3 points, three assists and three steals last season.

The Rangers, who were 11-9 last season, are hoping experience will pay off for them as well.

While Cassopolis will be quick, it lacks overall height according to coach Ricky Evans.

The Rangers are led by returning lettermen Brandon Glover and Noah Woods.

Dowagiac will also be in action Friday as it opens up Wolverine Conference West Division play on the road at Coloma.

Tip-off is slated for 7:15 p.m.
