Goodson helps IUSB to fourth straight win

SOUTH BEND — The Indiana University South Bend women’s basketball squad picked up their fourth consecutive victory with an 86-65 victory over Wilberforce University on Saturday afternoon.

Ashley Carson had a huge day for the Titans as she connected on 5-of-10 three point shots and scoring a team-high 19 points.  As a team, the Titans shot the ball well, shooting 50 percent from the field.

The win moves IU South Bend to 6-3 overall. Tuesday will open up Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference action for the Titans as they travel to Holy Cross College.

The Titans briefly trailed by one point just one minute into the game. After Maegan Callaway netted a mid-range jumper to give IU South Bend their first lead of the game at the 17:36 mark and the Titans would not surrender their lead for the duration of the half.

Carson gave IU South Bend their first double-digit lead of the day when she drained her second three-point basket of the day.

Under a minute left in the half, Tatyanna Goodson converted a layup to give the Titans their largest lead of the day, 13 points, and would take that lead into the locker room.

IU South Bend shot the ball well in the first 20 minutes, shooting 45 percent from the field and 36 percent from long distance.

The Titans continued to pick up the pace in the second half, extending their lead to 17 points on multiple occasions.

Wilberforce continued to crash the boards and get second chance points, cutting the IU South Bendw lead to single digits with a pair of free throws with 10:30 left to play.

Freshman Courtney Smith provided a spark for the Titan late in the game as she scored six consecutive points to keep IU South Bend out in front.

The offense continued to put points on the board, and the defense began to get stops down the stretch.

A late 9-0 run from IU South Bend put the game out of reach as the Bulldogs did not have an answer for the transition game of the Titans.

Three other IU South Bend players scored in double-figures including Callaway with 17 points, Smith with 12 points, and Jackie Stalder with 10.
