Manchester University put seven student-athletes on the top two squads of the 2014 all-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference football honor teams released earlier this week.

It’s the 15th successive year in which the Spartans have had five-or-more recognized on the first and second teams.

Sophomore wide receiver/punt and kickoff returner Dakota Nelson (Fairland, Indiana) added another honor to an already well-equipped cadre. He was one of three first team selections and garnered special teams Player of the Year accolades adding to his Freshman of the Year award from 2013. Nelson scored four return touchdowns for the Spartans this season and leads the nation in punt return average and punt return touchdowns, averaging 25.5 yards per return with three scores. Nelson also averaged 25.9 yards per kickoff return with one touchdown this fall.

He was joined on the top team by junior center D’Ante Dorsey (Indianapolis) and senior defensive end Stephen Coble (Edwardsburg). Dorsey, picking up his first all-HCAC award, was part of an offensive line that blocked for one of the top yardage gaining (446.3 yards per game) and point scoring (34 points per game) groups in the league. Coble, earning his second all-HCAC mention, turned in a solid senior season with double figures in tackles for losses (11) and was one of three Black and Gold players garnering five-or-more sacks as part of 31 tackles.

Second team honorees were junior quarterback Logan Haston (Avon, Indiana), sophomore offensive lineman Eric Weitholter (Zionsville, Indiana), senior defensive lineman Jon Scribner (Fort Wayne, Indiana) and junior defensive back Taylor Anglemyer (Wakarusa, Indiana). Anglemyer gained his second award, while Haston, Scribner and Weitholter were all honored for the first time. Haston turned in a sparkling junior campaign, setting a single-game record in total offense along single-season marks in total offense, yards passing completions, and touchdown passes; Weitholter helped anchor a front line that blocked for one of the top yardage gaining (446.3 yards per game) and point scoring (34 points per game) groups in the league; Scribner led the Black and Gold in tackles for losses (13) and sacks (eight) among 50 tackles; and Anglemyer recorded three interceptions and four opponent pass break-ups to go with 51 tackles.

Senior running back Austin Adams (Dowagiac), freshman running back Hunter Hardee (Fishers, Indiana) and freshman linebacker Tyler Katschke (Winamac, Indiana) were selected to the honorable mention list. Senior wide receiver Collin Huffine (Centerville, Indiana) was named to the sportsmanship squad.
