Starfish Story: Kincheloe teachers make a difference

Many of the dedicated teachers at Kincheloe Elementary have been trained in Reading Recovery.

Reading Recovery is an intervention for students who don’t have all of the necessary skills to be successful readers and writers. Because early intervention is so important, students who receive this instruction are in the primary grades.

Reading Recovery is divided into two parts: reading recovery and literacy support. Students in first grade receive Reading Recovery. Students in other grades can receive literacy support. The students who have received instruction in Reading Recovery have benefited from the one-on-one instruction from teachers.

Kincheloe is fortunate to have eight of our staff members trained in this intervention. Kindergarten teachers Melissa McDonald and Melissa Lillie have received this training.

Our first grade teachers, Tami Small and Erica Schibley are trained. Second grade teachers Christine Green and Brenda Wagner received training. Third grade teacher Karen Hardisty and our Title I teacher Christa Siegel are trained as well.

Training involves a weekly three-hour class, peer observations and feedback, and hours of continued monthly training throughout the school year. The Reading Recovery trained teachers serve four students each semester. Literacy support teachers serve one to two students per semester.

Teachers are highly effective at tailoring their student lessons to each individual’s needs. They instruct each student, identify areas needing improvement and then use strategies to help students become self-sufficient in their reading and comprehension. Students attend lessons daily for 30 minutes for 15 to 20 weeks. The goal is to accelerate learning so that students are at or above grade level.

Kincheloe teachers are reaching each student — one at a time. They make a difference each and every day.
