Salvation Army seeking helpers

For most people, the holiday season is a joyful time spent with family and friends.

For others facing financial difficulties, it can be a stressful time with some families wondering where they will get the money to put food on buy presents for their children.

The Niles Salvation Army is offering several programs to assist those in need this holiday season. There are also many volunteer opportunities for those who wish to help the cause.

For more information about each program, or to volunteer, call the Salvation Army at (269) 684-2660

Thanksgiving Holiday Meal

The Salvation Army will offer a free holiday meal to the public from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23 at Michiana Christian Embassy, located at 1922 E. Main St. in Niles.

Scott Lolmaugh, volunteer coordinator for the Salvation Army, said they typically feed about 400 people.

“The focus is getting people together and providing fellowship,” he said.

The Salvation Army has offered the Thanksgiving meal for more than 15 years.

Toy Shop

The Salvation Army is currently signing people up for its Toy Shop Program, which offers several forms of holiday service depending on the person’s needs.

People can register to receive a gift for a child, become a family that is sponsored by another family or person, or receive a holiday food basket.

Lolmaugh said the Salvation Army is in the process of setting up times for people to register for the Toy Shop. Registration days are Dec. 1, 3 and 5. Please call to set up a registration appointment.

Lolmaugh also said the Salvation Army is in need of volunteers to help people register for the Toy Shop Program.

They are also looking for families to sponsor others.

Volunteers will be needed to help distribute items Dec. 17-20 and Dec. 22-23.

Bell Ringing

The Salvation Army is in need of people to ring bells for its red kettle collections this holiday season.

Volunteer bell-ringing opportunities are available at several locations, including Niles, Berrien Springs and Dowagiac.

While bell ringers are out now, Lolmaugh said they increase their efforts after Thanksgiving.

This collection drive is the largest for the Salvation Army each year.

“It is very, very important because it is our main public push,” Lolmaugh said.

Money raised goes toward the Salvation Army’s operating budget and holiday programs.
