Edward Joseph Flick, age 79 years of Niles, Michigan passed away on Friday, Nov. 7, 2014 at Loyola University Hospital, Maywood, Illinois following a brief illness.

Ed was born March 5, 1935 in Three Oaks, Michigan to Albert and Martha (Sittig) Flick. He was married to Betty Jean Weiser on November 14, 1959 at the Saint Mary Catholic Church in Niles. This year would have been 55 years of an amazing life together, raising five wonderful children and loving and spoiling 9 amazing grandchildren. Ed would never miss an opportunity to brag about all of them.

Ed graduated from the Saint Mary Catholic School in 1950 and was a Niles High School graduate in 1953. He was a Veteran of the United States Army. He worked for National Standard Company for 42 years, retiring in 1997. After one year of retirement, he was called by a friend at Signal Point Golf Club in Niles to help clean up after the tornado in 1998 and continued to work there for 16 years, then became ill. Ed was an avid golfer and to say he was a die-hard Notre Dame fan was an understatement. Ed bowled for the Knights of Columbus and National Standard bowling teams and played softball for Strohs and National Standard teams. Whenever he could play a sport that involved a ball, big or small, he was happy.

He was a member of Saint Mary Catholic Church in Niles for seventy-eight years and a past member of the Niles Knights of Columbus. Ed delivered Meals on Wheels for a number of years.

Ed is survived by his wife of 54 years, Betty Jean Flick of Niles; children, Judith (& Gary) Lunger of Texas, Brian Edward of Niles, Martha (Todd) Jungenberg of Nepal, Michelle (Gary) Hegland of South Bend and Melissa (Jeff) Hatch of Dowagiac; and grandchildren, Alexander, Taylor, Sophia, Autumn, Andrew, Grace, Emmalee, Sydney and Jack.  Also surviving are Ed’s siblings William (Pat) Flick of Fenton, Michigan, Mary Helen (& Huey) Hoadley of California, Katherine (Bob) Irwin of Iowa; nieces and nephews, Cathy (& John Brandt, Nancy (& Bill) Benica, Fred (& Lisa) Hoadley, Rod Hoadley, and Meghan (& Stefan) Schmelzer,and great-nieces and nephews, Genevieve, Natalie, Everett, Casey, Helen, Tessa and William., and great-nieces and nephews, Genevieve, Natalie, Everett, Casey, Helen, Tessa and William.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents, a niece, Bonnie Hoadley; two brothers-in-law, Dave Weiser and Charles Weiser and a sister-in-law Violet Rossi.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Edward Joseph Flick will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 14, 2014 at Saint Mary Catholic Church in Niles by the Rev. Alphonse Savarimuthu, MSFS of the parish. The service will conclude with military honors being given in the churchyard. Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery at a later date.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Halbritter Funeral Home, with recitation of The Rosary at 7:30 p.m.

Donations in memory of Ed may be made to Saint Mary Catholic Church, Niles.
