Support and solidarity

I saw a remarkable demonstration of support from one group of people for another last week. A teacher’s son tragically died and the teacher’s colleagues wanted to attend the services, which were scheduled during the school day. It was on a half day of school, but the schedule still didn’t allow for people to get to the church on time.

The principal reached out to another principal, who asked his staff if they could help.

Fifteen teachers and staff members from Brandywine Middle/Senior High School stepped up and covered classes at Brandywine Elementary so that the teachers and staff from that school could be there to support their partner and her family during this unthinkably terrible time.

The whole staff sat together in the church, and as I sat with them, I couldn’t help but think of the great show of support shown by those from the other building, who came to help their fellow professionals.

The teacher who lost her son spoke to the congregation and read from his favorite childhood book. I was amazed at the strength and incredible courage it took to do that. The fact that all of her partners were there to hear her and support her was most touching, too.

I am very humbled and honored to be working in a place where people are so willing to be helpful and supportive of one another.
