Cassopolis elects new village president

The Village of Cassopolis will have a new president after Clare Mallow was ousted Tuesday.

Now the question is, who will it be?

Diana McGrew edged Jim Bronke by a mere two votes, 137-135. Mallo finished with just 71 votes.

According to Monica Kennedy, Cass County Register/Clerk, Bronke has up to six days to ask for a recount once the election is certified by the county. If there are no glitches, the election could be certified as quickly as today or Friday.

“I don’t know,” McGrew answered when asked about the recount. “If it were me, I would ask for a recount.”

Since the votes were split evenly between herself and Bronke, McGrew said she has a lot to get accomplished.

“What it means to me is I have my work cut out for me,” she said. “If you add up all the votes, a majority of the voters did not vote for me. I have to work to prove myself. This was not a slamdunk. I am going to have to work to get their approval by doing good things in this community.”

Mallo, who spent 23 years on the village council and the last six and a half years as president, had no comment on the results of the election.

Incumbent Cynthia Ash will return to her trustee seat on the village council, while William Blount and Katherine Yoder earned trustee positions.

Ash finished with 238 votes, while Yoder had 174 votes and Blount 165.

Incumbent David Johnson won re-election for a partial term expiring Nov. 20, 2016. He was running unopposed. He garnered 281 votes.

Once the election is certified and there are no recounts needed, Cassopolis Village Council members will take office Nov. 20.
