Library to offer candy, games

While the local library would be near the bottom of most children’s list of spookiest places, the Dowagiac District Library will be getting in on the Halloween sprit Friday afternoon.

The downtown building will be hosting a special game night for kids and teenagers alike from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., inside its children’s section on the second floor. Tables will be set up with various board games for visitors to play with one another, along with a projector and an Xbox for kids who want to play a round of “Call of Duty Zombies.”

The staff will be working later into the evening than usual as well, handing out candy to attendees and to kids out trick or treating.

“We’ll be open for four hours, but kids can stop in whenever and stay as long they want,” said Director Jacob Munford.

While they will offer traditional standbys like Jenga or Apples to Apples, the staff will also feature special Halloween games like Smash Up, a card game featuring famous monsters, and Last Night on Earth, a board game that has players fighting to survive a zombie apocalypse.

This is the second game night that the library has held, and the first Halloween event they’ve held since Munford took over as director, he said. With this year’s holiday falling on Friday, the staff figured it would be a perfect time to let the city’s youth work off some energy afterschool, before trick or treating begins.

“I know these kind of programs work at libraries, we just need to find the right time and day to hold them,” he said.

The library will hold another game night in Wednesday, Nov. 26. For additional information, contact the library at (269) 782-3826.
