Margaret Ethelyn Hunter was born Sept. 28, 1921, in Dowagiac. Her parents were Mary Shurte Hunter and Minah V. Hunter. Her siblings were George, Elizabeth, Howard, Gordon and Isaac Hunter. She graduated from Dowagiac High School in 1939 and attended Cass County Normal the following year.

She earned her BA degree from Michigan State University, East Lansing graduating in 1944 and her MA degree from the same university a few years later. She also attended art courses for three summers at Notre Dame University.

She taught art and drama at Webber Junior High in Saginaw, Michigan before coming to Dowagiac to teach art. At first she had all grades from one to high school; but as the system grew, she worked with junior high and then senior high students only. She also taught one summer for the Cassopolis school system and two evening classes for Southwestern Michigan College.

Margaret has three nieces; Mrs. Charles (Helen) Mosley, Mrs. Gerald (Virginia) Murawski and Mrs. Juan (June) Yaksic. Her nephew, James Hunter preceded her in death. His wife, Emily Britton Hunter, is also a loved member of this family.

As a child she worked in the local 4-H club. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Cass County Audubon Society, the Dowagiac Junior Arts Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, a teacher’s society, and she was a member of the Visual Arts Committee of the Dowagiac’s Dogwood Festival. She was a member of Captain Samuel Felt Chapter of the DAR and served as Vice Regent and Regent for a few years.

A gathering of family and friends will take place at Clark Chapel and Cremation Services, 405 Center St., Dowagiac, MI. on Sunday, Oct. 26, from 1 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 3 p.m. Officiating at the service will be Pastor Chad Benkert. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery on Monday.
