Cooper helps Owens Tech win 12th straight

ELYRIA, Ohio — The No. 16 Owens Community College women’s volleyball team breezed past Lorain County Community College 25-16, 25-18, 25-15 in straight sets tonight.

Macy Reigelsperger (Coldwater/Coldwater, Ohio) and Ciarra Wirick (Benjamin Logan/West Liberty, Ohio) each had a big first set with five kills and nine digs, respectively. Stephanie Kipp (Ida/Monroe, Michigan) had three first set blocks, as well.

In the second set, Aricka LaVoy (Eastwood/Pemberville, Ohio) had six digs, while Ally Mikesell (St. Henry/St. Henry, Ohio) added five. Jessica Cooper(Brandywine/Niles, Mich.) had 10 assists in the set, as well.

In the third set, Owens closed it out behind six kills from Erika Hartings (Coldwater/Coldwater, Ohio), seven more assists from Cooper and three blocks from Taylor Purcell (Bedford/Temperance, Michigan).

Overall, Hartings had a team-high 14 kills. Reigelsperger and Purcell each added six, and Mikesell had five. Cooper had a team-high 24 assists, while Deanna Smith(Riverview/Riverview, Mich.) added 14.

Wirick finished with a team-high 16 digs. LaVoy (13) and Mikesell (10) also had double figures. While four players had one service ace apiece, Reigelsperger and Purcell each had a team-high five blocks. Mikesell and Kipp each added three total.

Owens has now won 12 in a row heading into Friday’s 6 p.m. road match against Cincinnati State Technical and Community College.

Owens is 30-8 overall and 11-1 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) play. Following Friday’s match, the team will host No. 8 Columbus State (26-1, 12-0 OCCAC) in its regular season finale.
