War hero to speak at Buchanan Veteran’s Day celebration

The Buchanan American Legion Post 51 will host an appearance by Korean War veteran and author Bob VandeLinde for this year’s Veterans Day celebration.

VandeLinde will speak twice in Buchanan and once in St. Joseph during his visit to the area Nov. 10 and 11. The Buchanan programs are at 7 p.m. Nov. 10 at Buchanan High School and at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at the Buchanan American Legion post.

The St. Joseph program is at 6 p.m. Nov. 11 at Michigan Lutheran High School.

All of the programs are free and open to the public.

A native of West Virginia, VandeLinde now lives in Virginia. He is the author of three books about his Korean War experiences including his latest, “Korea: Why Were We There? What Were We Fighting For?” His other books are “Korea” and “Respect: Forgotten Heroes.”

Sgt. First Class VandeLinde, a member of the 187th Airborne Infantry, earned the Silver Star in action while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, near Sukchon, Korea while leading an eight-man forward outpost and protecting his company from a surprise attack.
