An Lake Michigan Catholic own goal off a throw in by Zach Schmidt in the 72nd minute kept the Brandywine soccer team undefeated in BCS Athletic Conference play Thursday.

The Bobcats edged the Lakers 4-3 as Brandywine won its ninth straight match and improved to 5-0 in the league and 11-2 on the season.

“It was a great game,” Brandywine coach Evan Winkler said. “It was a huge win for our team. They just battled and grinded out the win. We played very mentally tough and where able to over come adversity to win the game.”

Brandywine grabbed a 2-1 halftime lead on goals by Dominic Stella in the third minute and Schmidt in the 28th minute. The pair assisted on each other’s goal.

In between, in the sixth minute, Noah Kohler scored off an assist by Daniel McEachen.

The Lakers, ranked No. 9 in the state, opened the second half with back-to-back goals to take a 3-2 lead.

Andrew Janson scored 10 minutes into the second half to tie the score at 2-2 and McEachen scored in the 52nd minute on a penalty kick to give LMC the one-goal advantage.

Schmidt tied the match at 4-4 three minutes later setting up the late-match dramatics.

“Zach over came getting a yellow card and scored two goal and assisted or was involved in the other two,” Winkler said. “We have been 8-0 the last three years we played them, so my guys really want to prove something tonight.”

The Bobcats held a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal in a very defensive minded match.

“Sean Danner had a huge save at the end of the game,” Winkler said. “Kudzia Nyasvisvo played great defense on their best player Danny and the rest of the defense played great help defense to help him out.”

The 11 wins is a new school record for Brandywine, which will travel to Dowagiac on Saturday for a non-league match set to begin at 10 a.m.
