BUCHANAN — Two children, a woman and a male tenant escaped without injury from a fire that broke out in a two-unit residential apartment Friday on South Red Bud Trail in downtown Buchanan.

Dwight Gaul, who lives alone in the unit connected to the one where the fire started, said he was on his computer watching the movie “Godzilla” when he noticed smoke.

He opened a door to the other unit and saw fire coming from the stove. He said he was unable to put out the flames before leaving.

Buchanan Fire Chief Mike Adams said a woman and two children were at home at the time of the fire. They all got out safely. The woman declined to be interviewed.

Buchanan Fire was dispatched at 11:30 a.m. to 401 1/2 S. Red Bud Trail for a call of a residential fire. Buchanan called for mutual aid, bringing support from Buchanan Township, Bertrand Township, Niles City, Niles Township and Galien fire departments. Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance Service also responded.

Adams said flames were visible as they were staging the area and that the fire was knocked down within 10 minutes. There was heavy damage to the kitchen and living room in the unit where the fire started.

A dog was rescued from Gaul’s unit.

The fire remained under investigation Friday.
