Walter Seratt, 78, of Dowagiac, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2014, in Meadow Woods Nursing and Rehab in Bloomingdale.

Walter was born June 16, 1936, in Dyersburg, Tennessee, the son of Clayton and Alice (Littrell) Seratt.

Walter served in the U.S. Army and was formerly employed by Clark Equipment in Buchanan and Bendix Co. in South Bend, and he farmed in the area.

He married Phyllis Flanagan on Jan. 4, 1959 in Buchanan, and she survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Cheryl (Jim) Grissom of Lawton; Wanda Allen, of Dowagiac; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; one sister, Peggy Reagen, of Tennessee and two brothers, Nathan (Cindy) Seratt of Illinois and Lonnie (Peggy) Seratt of Tennessee.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son Billy Seratt, brother George Seratt and three sisters, Martha Essary, Eudora Simpson and Emma Ruth Jackson.

Funeral services will be Friday, Sept. 19, at 2 p.m. in the Newell Funeral Home in Decatur with James Abshagen officiated. Burial will be in Hamilton Cemetery in Decatur with military rites conducted by VFW Celery City Post No. 6248 and American Legion Post No. 309, both of Decatur.
