Buchanan rallies to nip Rangers

A 14-point fourth quarter completed a come-from-behind 28-27 victory for visiting Buchanan over Cassopolis Friday night.

The BCS Athletic Conference Red Division showdown saw the Rangers (3-1) open up a 27-14 lead through three quarters only to give up a pair of touchdowns in the final 12 minutes.

Buchanan’s Dalton Riddle hauled in a 30-yard scoring strike from Jarrett Thomas to cut the lead to 27-21 and then Thomas hit Christian Catalano with the game-wining 17-yard touchdown pass.

Cassopolis opened the scoring with a 7-yard Noah Woods run, but the extra point kick failed, leaving the Rangers up 6-0.

The Bucks’ Bryce Vineyard scored on a 12-yard pass from Thomas and Alex Martinez tacked on the extra point to give Buchanan (1-3) a 7-6 advantage after one quarter.

The Rangers scored a pair of touchdowns in the second quarter to take a 21-14 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Nick Murphy scored on a 1-yard run and Isaiah Crider added the 2-point conversion, while Crider scored on a 31-yard jaunt.

Buchanan cut the Cassopolis lead to seven points when Martinez caught a 10-yard pass from Thomas.

Nick Baker scored the Rangers’ third quarter touchdown on a 20-yard run.

Cassopolis rushed for 356 yards, but was 1-of-11 for 13 yards passing.

Buchanan ran for 131 yards and Thomas was 13-of-21 for 192 yards and the fourth touchdowns.
