Mabel Elizabeth Nietch, 97, former long-time resident of Niles, Michigan died on Monday, Sept. 1, 2014 in Austin, Texas.

She was born on March 2, 1917 in Evansville, Indiana. She lived many years in South Bend, Indiana where she was employed at the former Robertson’s Department Store.

Mabel came to Niles in 1960, and owned and operated The Garden Gate florist in Buchanan, Michigan. In Niles, she was a member of Saint Mary Catholic Church, and was an active member of its Altar-Rosary Society. In 2000, she moved to Austin.

She was married to G. Howard Nietch, who preceded her in death on March 28, 2004. She was also preceded in death by two grandsons, James and David, and by a great-grandson, Nicholas.

Surviving family includes her children, Patricia Moore of Austin, Texas, and Charles (and Ronda) Nietch of Niles; six grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.

The Mass of Christian Burial for Mabel Nietch will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2014 at Saint Mary Catholic Church in Niles by the Rev. Alphonse Savarimuthu, MSFS of the parish and concelebrated by the Rev. William P. Melody, C.S.C. of Notre Dame, Indiana. Committal Rites will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Niles.

The family will receive relatives and friends beginning at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Contributions in memory of Mabel Nietch may be made to the Saint Joseph’s Indian School, 1301 North Main Street, Chamberlain, South Dakota, 57326. Arrangements were made at the Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles.
