Nov. 22, 1922 — Sept. 5, 2014

Dorothy A. (Card) Grove, 91, of Granville, formerly of Niles, Michigan, passed away Friday, Sept. 5, 2014, at her home at Kendal at Granville. She was born Nov. 22, 1922, in Cleveland, Ohio, to the late James and Florence (Buescher) Card.

An intrepid adventurer in her youth, Dorothy “Dottie” traveled to Germany as an exchange student where she was cautioned to speak only German in public to avoid scrutiny by the increasing military presence of the Nazis. Another adventure took her to a remote fishing camp in Canada where she hiked and canoed with her brother. After raising six children, Dottie and her husband of 63 years, James “Jim” Humiston Grove, M.D., resumed traveling throughout Great Britain, Europe, Canada and Egypt where Dottie collected examples of fiber arts.

At home, she would recreate intricate lace patterns, South American molés, and quilting techniques. Such was her interest in needlework that she was a member of the Embroiderers Guild of America, and traveled annually to meet with, and learn from, other fiber artists.

She served her community as Chairwoman of the Medical Auxiliary of Berrien County, Michigan, and as a member of the school board for the Brandywine School District in Niles, Michigan.

Dottie was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, South Bend, Indiana, for over 40 years where she sang in the choir.

Dottie attained her Master’s Degree in Nursing from Denison University and the Frances Payne Bolton

School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University where she subsequently worked.

She is survived by a son, James H. (Deanna) Grove of Cleveland, Ohio; five daughters, Carolyn Grove of Ashland, Wisconsin; Patricia (James) Fink of Marietta, Georgia; Virginia (John) Jerzykowski of Buchanan, Michigan; Jennifer (Peter) Eckel of Peaks Island, Maine; and Katherine (Mohammed) Ayshi of Dublin, Ohio; twelve grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Jim, whom she married January 25, 1946; and two brothers, James Card and Tom Card.
