The Brandywine football team put up some pretty impressive numbers in its season opener last Thursday night.

The Bobcats rolled over Bridgman in a non-divisional BCS Athletic Conference match up.

Brandywine scored 40 points before the Bees even got on the scoreboard.

In the process, the Bobcats (1-0) sent a message to the rest of its opponents that they will have to stop a pretty potent offensive unit.

Brandywine is able to attack its opponents by both land and sky.

Marty Ward Jr. and Andrew Duckett combined for 238 of the Bobcats’ 267 yards rushing.

Both also scored a pair of touchdowns.

Since the ground game was working so well, veteran Brandywine coach Mike Nate didn’t see much of a need to throw the football.

Duckett was 2-for-3 for 19 yards.

Defensively the Bobcats were equally as impressive.

Bridgman was limited to just 235 yards of total offense, most of which came after Nate pulled his starters and gave the back-ups some playing time.

“We really played a complete game tonight, which is kind of a rarity in the first game of a new season,” Nate said. “Our guys were very understanding of the things we needed to get done on the football field, tonight, and they did it.”

LaLumiere (0-1) is coming off a 28-18 loss to future BCS member River Valley Thursday night.

Last year, Brandywine defeated LaLumiere 55-12.

The Bobcats rolled up 433 yards in total offense, while holding the Lakers to just 172.

Ward had 153 yards on 14 carries with a pair of touchdowns.

Duckett was 8-of-11 for 88 yards and three touchdowns.

Kickoff for Saturday’s game is set for 1 p.m.

Niles at Mattawan

The Vikings are coming off an emotional victory over Kalamazoo Loy Norrix last Thursday night.

Now the Vikings (1-0) must get those emotions in check as they hit the road once again Friday when they head to Mattawan for a SMAC West Division clash.

Niles was able to get its passing game going early against the Knights and senior Ra’Quon Glenn had a big night, hauling in seven passes for 151 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Alex Harpenau finished the game 14-of-21 passing for 209 yards.

The Vikings finished the night with 383 yards of total offense. Their rushing attack was led by Warren Smith’s 78 yards on eight carries.

Defensively, Niles gave up just 175 yards in total offense to Loy Norrix, of which, 36 came on the ground.

Mattawan (0-1) dropped a heartbreaking 14-11 decision to Portage Central.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
