Mary Lowe

Mary E. Lowe, 84, of Cassopolis, died peacefully Monday morning, Aug. 25, in her home.

Mary was born April 27, 1930, in Monterey, Indiana to Henry and Helen (Sheaks) Chaney, the second eldest of four girls. Mary attended school in Monterey where she graduated with high honors in 1948. She married her soul mate, Alfred Eugene “Bud” Lowe on Dec. 24, 1949, in Knox, Indiana. They enjoyed more than 64 years of marriage until his passing Jan. 19, 2014.

Mary and Bud moved to Cassopolis, Michigan in 1972 where they worked side by side on their farm. Mary had a roadside stand on Brownsville Road where she enjoyed and took pride in selling sweet corn and many other fresh vegetables that they had grown on their farm. The family remembers people coming from miles around for the watermelons and pumpkins. She also enjoyed flowers, bird watching and feeding the hummingbirds. Every Sunday you could smell the aroma of fried chicken coming from Mary’s kitchen as she teased her family about “slaving over the hot stove” for them.

Mary will be greatly missed by family and friends. She is survived by two daughters, Karon (Marcus) Wagner of Middlebury, Indiana, Chrystal Teeter of Cassopolis; two sons, Thomas Lowe of Constantine and James Lowe of White Pigeon; fourteen grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; several great-great -grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mary was also preceded in death by one daughter, Katrina Lowe; one son, Timmy Lowe; and three sisters, Bessie Bauer, Dorothy Burkett, and Nadine Burkett.

Family and friends will gather Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 2 p.m. for a Graveside service in Reames and Norton Cemetery, south of Cassopolis, where Lowe will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband.

The family prefers memorial contributions be made in Mary’s name to Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital, PO Box 1000, Department 142, Memphis, Tennessee 38101-9908.
