The Niles freshmen and JV volleyball teams both reached the semifinals of their respective tournaments on Friday.

The Vikings JV were eliminated by Gull Lake in the semifinals at the Coloma Early Bird Invitational, 24-26, 25-10 and 11-15.

Niles finished third.  Niles came out first in their pool play, and lost in the semi-finals to Gull Lake.

The Vikings were defeated by Kalamazoo Loy Norrix in the semifinals of the Bridgman Invitational.

Bridgman Invitational

Niles freshmen finished first in its pool play and lost in the semifinals to Loy Norrix, 24-26 and 21-25.

“I was pleased with how well we played for our first tournament after only five practices together,” Niles freshman coach Samantha Brawley said. “First two games of the day were great serving and passing games for us, which is why we were so successful. The last game of the day is where those two aspects broke down for us though.

“We missed 13 serves in the game against Loy Norrix. We make those serves and we win the game. As freshmen, they showed me a lot of heart today, good and bad. Now we just have to learn to control those bad moments and we will be a solid team.”
