A little luck helped Edwardsburg edge Marcellus, 2-1, in the championship match of the Edwardsburg Soccer Invitational.

The Eddies scored twice in the second half on own goals. Both of those shots came from Marcellus’ Ethan Bainbridge. Bainbridge’s first unfortunate touch into his own goal came with 29:05 left in the match when an Edwardsburg shot hit off the left post and deflected off of Bainbridge into the goal.

With the match tied at 1, the Eddies scored with 10:50 left in the match on a mishit from Bainbridge off a corner kick from Edwardsburg’s Jonathan Albrecht.

“Definitely, some good fortune,” said Edwardsburg coach Sean Jesse.

The Eddies had a hard time converting off of Wildcats goalie Tanner Johnson, who finished with nine saves. Six of those saves came in the first have when the Eddies had 12 shots on goal. For the match, Edwardsburg outshot Marcellus, 17-3.

“That has kind of been one of our struggles,” Jesse said about finishing offensively. “We just, for whatever reason, don’t finish super well. We’ve been playing much better possession soccer. That’s what we talked about doing during the offseason. But, that possession soccer, hasn’t quite been real good in the final third (in the goal box). As we build up during the season hopefully we’ll come along and do better in that area.”

Marcellus tied the match at 1 after getting a goal from Florian Klotz on an assist from Todd Shelly with 20:10 left in the contest. The Wildcats totaled only three shots in the match.

“We definitely defended well,” Jesse said. “(Marcellus) hardly had any scoring opportunities. It was a good start.”

Edwardsburg, which played its first matches on Saturday, opened the invitational with a 3-1 win over Parchment.

Nick Karamalegos had a goal and an assist to lead the Eddies, who led 2-1 at halftime. Ben Chambers and Jacob Desment Brown each added a goal for Edwardsburg.
