Telling our stories

If there is anything I have learned about the Michiana region since I moved back home, it’s that there is always something going on.

In many areas, it’s not uncommon to have to travel an hour or more to find a good entertainment venue, beach or shopping mall. Most Michiana residents only have to travel a short distance up the highway to get to any number of these destinations.

Each of the dozen or so towns and cities that make up the area are packed full of things to do. Every community has its own unique restaurants, businesses, festivals and events, and each community is well-deserving of our coverage.

While the majority of our products are hyper-local newspapers focused on one or two towns or cities, several of our publications cover the entirety of the Michiana region. Off the Water, our entertainment section, is distributed from the coastline to past the state line every week. Michiana Life, a lifestyle magazine coming soon to the region, will be distributed quarterly to readers all over the same area.

To adequately tell all of the stories about the great opportunities in Michiana, we need people. If we spread our eyes and ears throughout the region, we are more likely to be aware of what is going on in the communities, and better equipped to inform readers from all over Michiana about the events and the people and locations providing them.

To accomplish this goal, Leader Publications is seeking experienced writers to be these “eyes and ears” throughout the Michiana community. Writers would have the opportunity to regularly write for one or both of the publications about the communities surrounding them and the people and places that make this region so special.

I’ve said before that there is no better way to get to know a community than to write about it, and I encourage other writers in the area to take advantage of this opportunity.

Freelance reporters and photographers interested in contributing to either Off the Water or Michiana Life should submit a resume and cover letter as well as clips and/or photo samples to myself at ambrosia.neldon@leaderpub.com, or 217 N. Fourth St., Niles, MI 49120.

We are very fortunate to live in region with so many opportunities, and it is important that the residents are aware of them. This requires people who are willing to get out and experience all that the area has to offer, meet the people who make it all possible and tell the stories that make Michiana the great community that it is.

I don’t know about you, but that sounds like a pretty fun job to me.
