There are some big changes coming to the local AM radio dial starting Aug. 25 as Mid-West Family Broadcasting’s heritage station, AM 1400, WSJM will commit to serve area sports fans as Sports Radio 1400 WSJM.

That is on the AM side of the dial only. All of WSJM’s regular news-talk programs will continue to be heard on WSJM-FM, 94.9, as they have been since 2008.

Operations Manager Jim Gifford and Sports Director Phil McDonald will oversee Sports Radio 1400 WSJM with McDonald guiding the programming effort.

McDonald is a graduate of Lake Michigan Catholic High School and Albion College. He began his career with WSJM in 1985 and has served as an air personality on WSJM, WIRX, WCSY and 98.3 The Coast, as well as serving as sports director.

Along with a strong emphasis on teams of local interest from the high school, college and professional ranks, Sports Radio 1400 WSJM is teaming up with some of the biggest names in sports media — Fox Sports, Dan Patrick, Jay Mohr and others to provide 24 hours of Sports Talk.

And of course AM 1400 will remain the home of the Detroit Tigers, The Detroit Lions and The University Of Michigan here in Southwest Michigan.

Sports Radio 1400 WSJM will not only serve as the on-air destination for area sports fans, it will also be the on-line destination for extensive coverage of area teams and athletes at www.wsjmsports.com.
