UPDATE: Dowagiac woman arraigned for assault with attempt to murder

Update: The suspect in this incident is identified as Brenda Joyce Love, 47, of Dowagiac. Love was arraigned Friday afternoon on the charges of assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to commit great bodily harm less than murder, felonious Assault and domestic violence.

Love’s bond was set at $150,000 and she remains in the Cass County Jail.

The victim in the stabbing is Gary Grady, 52, of Dowagiac. Grady was treated and released from his injuries.

 

A Dowagiac woman is in custody following a stabbing in Dowagiac in the early morning hours of Friday, July 18.

According to Director of Public Safety Steven Grinnewald, officers of the Dowagiac Police Department were dispatched to Hamilton Square Apartments, located at 315 N. Lowe St. in Dowagiac at 3:56 a.m. Friday for a report of a man being stabbed there.

Officers arrived and located the 52-year-old male victim with stab wounds to his neck and back area. The victim was transported to Borgess/Lee Memorial Hospital in Dowagiac by Pride Ambulance. The victim was then air-lifted to Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo, Michigan for further treatment of his injuries.

Officers obtained information from the victim and others at the scene and a suspect who is known to the victim was developed. Information on the suspect was broadcast to area law enforcement and officers began searching for the suspect.

The suspect was located in Niles at approximately 7:30 a.m. Friday and was taken into custody.

The suspect, a 47-year-old Dowagiac woman, will be lodged at the Cass County Jail on charges of assault with intent to murder. Charges are pending authorization from the Cass County Prosecutor’s Office. The name of the suspect is not being released pending her arraignment in Cass County Fourth District Court.

The victim was treated for non-life threatening injuries and was released from the hospital. This incident remains under investigation and police ask anyone with information to contact the Dowagiac Police Department at (269) 782-9743 or the Cass County Tip Line at (800) 462-9328.
