A Dowagiac resident is dead after an accident Friday morning on US-12 in Bertrand Township.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department is reporting that Lorelei Kickels died at the scene.

The accident occurred on US-12 between Red Bud Trail and Mayflower Road at 5:31 a.m.

According to police, a pickup truck driven by a 28-year-old male from Klamath Falls, Oregon, was travelling west and crossed the centerline, striking an eastbound car driven by Kickels.

The driver of the pickup sustained serious, but non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana, by Southwestern Michigan Community Ambulance Service.

A motorcycle was also involved, as the driver could not stop in time to avoid the vehicles/debris in the roadway. The motorcycle driver was transported to Lakeland Hospital in Niles and was treated and released with minor injuries.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation and drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department was assisted at the scene by SMCAS, Bertrand Township Fire Department, Berrien County Accident Reconstruction Investigators, Michigan Department Of Transportation and Michigan State Police.

The highway was closed for nearly four hours while the investigation and cleanup occurred.
