Fitch Camp a local treat for kids

On Wednesday afternoon, I finally had a chance to step foot on a piece of property near and dear to the hearts of many a Dowagiac resident.

Fitch Camp began its 73rd summer season last month, offering Dowagiac kids a chance to enjoy a month’s worth of fun and companionship for only $1 a day.

During my short visit during the camp’s family luncheon, I saw kids, parents and councilors alike enjoying themselves on the beautiful lakeside property.

There’s plenty for kids to do at the camp, including sports like basketball, kickball, volleyball and capture the flag. Kids can also swim, canoe and paddleboard on Cable Lake, with three lifeguards on duty to ensure they can enjoy the water in a safe manner.

While the cost and amenities are impressive, the most outstanding part of Fitch Camp is the fact that it’s located right here, only a few miles away from the city limits. While it makes sense that a summer camp could make use of stunning lakes and forests that dot the Dowagiac/Sister Lakes area, it’s always a pleasant surprise to see something like this flourish right in your backyard.

I confess I’ve never been much of an outdoorsman myself, but some of my fondest memories growing up have been at summer camps, mucking around outside and making new friends. I can tell you one thing though, these camps weren’t just a few minutes away from home and they sure as heck didn’t cost my folks a dollar a day for me to go.

After less than an hour at the camp, I know now why so many people I’ve spoken to think so highly of it. It’s truly a local treasure, and one that I hope sticks around for years to come.
