Cassopolis residents will have another opportunity voice their opinion about the possibility of raising chickens within city limits.

The Cassopolis Village Council passed a resolution during their regular meeting Monday night tentatively scheduling a public hearing for Aug, 11. The hearing is intended for to solicit opinions and concerns concerning the potential change in village ordinances that would allow residents to keep and maintain a small number of hens within village limits.

The Cassopolis Planning Commission submitted their recommendation for the ordinance change during their meeting last month, after the village received a request to change it from resident Bill Henry. Among the restrictions the commission requested with the change included:

• The property is two or more acres

• The owners may have no more than 10 hens (no roosters) on their property

• The permit must be applied for on an annual basis

• The chickens must confined inside a coop, with a minimum of 1 square foot of space for each bird

• The structure must be placed behind the property

• Residents applying for a permit would have to receive permission from neighbors to do so

The public hearing will be held during the meeting of the Cassopolis Village Council, which begins at 7 p.m. The council will vote on the matter after the closure of the hearing.

Other business conducted by the council on Monday included:

• Passage of a resolution to distribute a $550,000 Community Development Block Grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation to Postle Aluminum to be used for a jobs training program.

• Approval of a resolution granting a contract to Bill’s Roof Repair to fix issues with the village hall, in the amount of $24,615.

• Approval of several vehicle purchases: a new mini dump truck from C Wimberley Automotive for $36,472.60, a new police vehicle from Bill Snethkamp for $23,972 and two new lawnmowers from Cass Outdoor Power for $18,400.
