Jan. 14, 1931-July 5, 2014

 

Ilene L. Mackling, 83, of Edwardsburg, passed to rest on Saturday, July 5, 2014 at Golden Living Center, in Elkhart, Indiana, after an illness.

She was born Jan. 14, 1931 in LaPorte, Indiana, the daughter of Norris ‘Gadget’ DeWitt and Pauline A. Burkert.

Ilene was a registered nurse, having graduated from St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in South Bend. She worked in the early 1950s for Dr. Dan Everett in his office in Edwardsburg, and had practiced nursing after that at, Cass County Medical Care Facility, in Cassopolis.

Ilene was married on Jan. 14, 1953 in Paw Paw to Donald E. Mackling and they had four children; Sue Ellen (Kenneth) Schoon of St. Cloud, FL, Cynthia Rose (Denny) Thompson of Elkhart, Pamela K. (Scott) Johnson of Elkhart and Jeffery (Janet) Mackling of Elkhart. There are nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Also surviving is her mother Pauline Ward of South Bend and Ilene’s siblings; Janet K. Phillips of Mishawaka and Walter (Jane) Ward of Three Oaks. Other survivors are two sisters-in-law, Marlene Ward of Mishawaka and Joann Mackling of Edwardsbug.

Family who have passed are her husband Donald E. Mackling on April 22, 1993, her father Norris Ward in 1981 and her brother Norris John Ward.

Family and friends gathered on Wednesday, July 9, 2014, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Paul E. Mayhew Funeral Home, Edwardsburg. The Service of Remembrance will be Thursday, July 10, 2014 at 11 a.m. in the Edwardsburg Presbyterian Church, 68961 Lake St., where all may gather for one hour before the service. Officiating will be the Rev. Brenda Gordon, friend of the family. Interment will follow at Adamsville Cemetery, Edwardsburg.
