Above and beyond the call of duty

This letter is concerning a good deed done by Trooper John Miller.

I wanted to thank Trooper John Miller and the Niles branch of the Michigan State Police for a good deed that was accorded my uncle on May 23, this year.

My uncle had become confused while driving on I-94 near Watervliet. Some one called the state police at Niles and Trooper John Miller was dispatched to check on the incident.

On checking my uncle’s confusion he had an EMT check him out and then drove him back to the Niles post.

Then he called me. I live in Farmington, Michigan, about three hours away. It was after 10:30 and I had taken a pill to help me sleep, but I was informed that my uncle could not be checked into a hospital, nor stay at the police post as it was 2 a.m. There would only be a dispatcher there and I would have to drive out that night and pick him up.

I am 69, and unfamiliar with the area, had taken a sleeping pill and by now it was almost midnight. I made a pot of coffee and was about to make the best of it with my sister and wife as co-pilots.

Officer Miller called and after checking for possible solutions, got in touch with local Salvation Army office and they informed him he could stay at a local motel that they dealt with, at no charge even. To say you were a lifesaver this night is an understatement.

My uncle is under medical care and no longer has access to a car. I really wonder if I had tried to make the drive that night if I would have made it or crashed myself.

I cannot thank you enough for your assistance, Officer Miller. I really believe you went above and beyond what the law required. This shows your character and responsibility to serve the people of the State of Michigan.

I hope that you have a long and successful career in the State Police. We need more people like you in public service.
