Niles native and veterinarian hosts 5K for canine cancer research

A Niles native and veterinarian is leading a 5K run next month to help celebrate animals, raise awareness for canine cancer and help fight the disease.

“Cancer is all too common. It affects one in four of our precious friends,” said Dr. Amanda Hodgson-Cunningham, DVM, co-founder of Canine Cancer Care, Inc. “Cancer in our pets can be preventable, treatable, and curable. Not every pet parent knows that. It is time to bring attention to this issue.”

The event kicks off at 8 a.m. July 26 at Villa Macri Ristorante in Granger and the festivities wrap up at 1 p.m.

“We have a lot of entertainment and education planned for both participants and spectators to enjoy. Our team is ecstatic. We just can’t wait for the fun. A big thanks to Jerry Macri and staff for supporting this fantastic cause,” said race director, Crystal Watson.

The Dodger Runs 5K schedule is as follows:

• 8 a.m. — 5K Run/Walk with or without

a furry companion (all ages)

• 9 a.m. — Veterinary oncologist Session

• 9:30 a.m. — Complimentary Tot Trot (6 years and under)

• 10 a.m. — Awards Ceremony

• 10:30 a.m. — Complimentary pet contests.

Fun and educational activities offered include complimentary pet exams by Cunningham; Clay Fire Cares Pink Fire Truck tours with Fire Department Marshall Dave Cherrone; pet photos; race photography; a dunk tank; sponsors; vendors; raffles; face painting; bounce house; music and more.
