Thinclads prepared for state finals

A pair of record-setting performers will lead a small contingent from Dowagiac to the state track finals at Houseman Field in Grand Rapids Saturday.

Kyle Solloway and Crieona Rodgers both hold the school record in the high jump for the Chieftains. Both will compete at the Division 2 meet on Saturday.

Rodgers will also compete in the long jump.

Solloway twice this season set the school record in the high jump. He cleared 6-8 at the Wolverine Conference Meet. His mark of 6-2 at the regional leaves him tied for third.

Jacob Taylor of Haslett brings in the best mark from the regional competition at 6-9.

Rogers’ school record in the high jump is 5-6.5. She cleared 5-2 at the regional, which is tied for fifth. Kathryn Mills of Eaton Rapids has the best jump coming into the state meet at 5-7.

She finished second last year with a height of 5-4.

In the long jump, Rodgers’ mark of 15-11 is well down the list. The top jump at the regional was by Kitana Espinoza of Marshall with a mark of 17-3. Rodgers’ career-best is 17-1.5.

Hazel Kennedy will also compete at the state meet in the shot put. She had a throw of 33-0.5, which is well down the list. The top throw is 44-0 by Brittany Casey of Zeeland East.

Niles will also be well represented at the state meet.

Individually, Balaj Bruckner will compete in the shot put. He had a toss of 49-2.5 at the regional, which is 12th best. The top throw from the regional came from Aaron Curtis of Coopersville, who had a throw of 54-0.

Niles will also compete in the 800- and 400-meter relays.

The 800-meter unit consists of Josh Buckingham, Nick Knoll, Conner Amburg and Elijah Thompson. That group posted a time of 1:32.51 at the regional. The top time coming into the state meet is 1:30.26 by Lansing Waverly.

The 400-meter team will be made up of Buckingham, Cameron Haines, Amburg and Thompson. They posted a time of 45.38. The top time is 43.58 by Zeeland West.

For the girls team, the Vikings will have Miranda Baker compete in the long jump, Maya Bookins in the 100-meters and Tatyanna Goodson compete in the 400-meters as individuals.

Niles also is sending its 800-meter relay team to the state finals.

Baker cleared 5-0 at the regional. That height ties her for 18th among state qualifiers.

Brookins ran a 13.35 at the regional. The best time coming into the state finals is 12.35 by Camron Nelson of Forest Hills Eastern.

Goodson ran 1:02.03 at the regional, which puts her well down the list. The top time is 58.57 by Trenton’s Isabel Olds.

The Vikings’ 800-meter relay team consists of Ashiah Brookins, Maya Brookins, Goodson and Lashonda Green. They posted a time of 1:46.99 in Sturgis at the regional. The top time from regional competition was posted by Lansing Waverly at 1:44.46.
