Milton Township has a new clerk.

On Monday, the board of trustees unanimously approved a motion to appoint Steve Sante to the position vacated when Sue Kronewitter resigned May 16.

Sante is a real estate appraiser who has lived in Milton Township since 2005. He has served on the township’s volunteer board of review since 2008.

“I have an interest in serving the community and this is the next step up,” said Sante.

Supervisor Robert Benjamin said Sante would serve the remainder of Kronewitter’s term, which expires in 2016.

Sante was the only person to apply for the position, which needed to be filled within 45 days, according to Benjamin.

Benjamin said the township needed to act quickly because it is difficult to run the office without a clerk.

“We needed to have a clerk in place,” Benjamin said.

According to May 13 board meeting minutes, Kronewitter submitted her resignation after a township staff member lodged complaints against her, including that she created an uncomfortable work environment.

A phone message left for Kronewitter Tuesday was not returned.

The board accepted her resignation at the end of the meeting. It went into effect May 16.

“It was unexpected, but we understand,” said Benjamin. “She was a good clerk and ran elections well based on everything we heard from the county.”
