Niles, Dowagiac, Edwardsburg product regional champions

STURGIS — Southwest Michigan will be well represented at the Division 2 state finals at Houseman Field in Grand Rapids May 31.

Niles grabbed a trio of championships at the regional in Sturgis on Friday, while Dowagiac and Edwardsburg each produced one champion.

Balaj Bruckner brought home the shot put championship with a throw of 49-21/2.

Also qualifying for the boys state finals by finishing second were the Vikings’ 800-meter relay team (Josh Buckingham, Nick Knoll, Elijah Thompson, Conner Amburg) and 400-meter relay team (Buckingham, Cameron Haines, Thompson, Amburg) as well as Dowagiac’s Kyle Solloway, who cleared 6-2 in the high jump.

The Vikings also had a pair of regional champions on the girls side.

Tatyanna Goodson captured the 400-meters and was a member of the Niles winning 800-meter relay team which also consists of Maya and Ashiah Brookins and Lashonda Green.

Dowagiac’s Creiona Rodgers cleared 5-2 to win the regional high jump championship, while Edwardsburg’s Olivia Hack won the 300-meter hurdles.

Rogers will also compete in the long jump after finishing second.

Also advancing to the state finals by finishing second were Niles’ Maya Brookins in the 100-meters and Miranda Baker in the high jump, as well as Dowagiac’s Hazel Kennedy in the shot put.
