Like its baseball counterparts, the Dowagiac softball team split a pair of non-league games against St. Joseph Monday.

The Chieftains (15-4) committed eight errors in losing the first game 11-5. Kourtney Mitchell and Mickie Kiggens were both 2-for-3.

Dowagiac rebounded to win the nightcap 10-4.

Taylor Hulett was the winner in the second game.

Dowagiac had six hits, including a double by Alyssa Allen. McKenzie Herter was 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

“We played two opposite games tonight,” Dowagiac coach Mike Behnke said. “In the first game we had a defensive implosion committing eight errors and we couldn’t hit with anyone on base leaving 13 runners on base.

“In the second game, we played better defense and got timely hitting to score runs. We have four conference games this week and have to play better and get more consistent with our gloves and bats if we are going to win those games.”
