The Niles City Council took several actions during Monday’s regular meeting, including striking down a motion to change the city’s limb and brush pickup program.

The amendment would have decreased the number of times the city picked up limb and brush from 14 times a year to twice a year. Five of eight council members voted against it.

Also, the council approved a request by the Riverfront Optimist Club to conduct the 12th annual Niles Bluegrass Festival at the Riverfront Amphitheater from May 29 to June 1. The motion did not include a request by the Optimist Club for the city to donate $2,900 to the festival.

Additionally, the council voted to begin the process of eliminating the Airport Board and Design and Review Board. However, a motion to begin the process of eliminating the Board of Public Utilities was struck down by a vote of 2 to 6.
