Scanlon kicks 52-yard field goal in WMU spring game

KALAMAZOO — Zach Terrell threw for a game-high 240 yards and three touchdowns as the Gold Team defeated the Brown Team, 28-17, in the annual Western Michigan Brown and Gold “Wooden Oar” game on Saturday afternoon.

Corey Davis, Kendrick Roberts and Darius Phillips were each on the receiving end of Terrell’s touchdown passes with Davis leading all receivers with 101 yards. Kendricks tied Phillips with a game-high four catches and also had 73 yards. Cameron Thomas quarterbacked the Brown team to 101 yards and a touchdown through the air and also had a rushing touchdown. Edward Rolle led Gold with a game-high eight tackles and teammate Devon Brant had a 64-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Brant struck first for Gold when he stepped in front of a pass by Thomas and took it 64-yards to the house with 4:40 left in the first quarter.

Just before the end of the quarter Terrell hooked up with Davis for a 71-yard touchdown pass for a one-play scoring drive to push Gold’s lead to 14-0.

Thomas ended the second quarter with a two-yard touchdown run to get Brown on the board, with Gold leading 14-7 at halftime.

Terrell and Phillips connected for the quarterback’s second touchdown of the game to cap off a six-play, 69-yard drive at 10:00 in the third quarter to push Gold’s lead to 21-7. Phillips racked up three catches for 61 yards on the drive, including the 25-yard score.

Brett Scanlon responded for Brown with a 52-yard field goal to cap off a 10-play 55-yard drive at 7:42 in the fourth quarter.

Both teams scored with time winding down in the game. Gold added its final touchdown with 1:45 left when Terrell found Roberts on a slant route from 10-yards out to push the lead to 28-10.

Thomas found Trevor Sweeney from two-yards out to cap off a drive that was spotted to start at the Gold 17-yard line.

With the Spring Season over the Broncos now look to the opening of the 2014 season on Aug. 30 at Purdue.
