It wasn’t a pretty start to the season Thursday for the Brandywine baseball team.

Errors, walks and struggles offensively cost the Bobcats in a 7-1 loss to Berrien Springs.

Game two of the doubleheader was halted in the bottom of the fourth inning because of darkness. The Shamrocks were leading that game, 7-0.

“Eleven walks and five errors,” said Brandywine coach David Sidenbender, who talked to his team for several minutes after the loss. “We took too many pitches. I think we struck out nine times. You could tell it was our first game, going up against live pitching in a game situation. I think we’ve been outside (practicing) about five times so far all year.”

The Shamrocks scored an unearned run in the second inning and scored again in the third on an RBI single from Brian Shembarger.

Zach Grishaber drove in Brandywine’s lone run in the third inning.

Berrien Springs blew the game open by scoring three runs in the sixth inning.

Five of the Shamrock batters who walked in the game scored.

Brandywine starting pitcher Kyle Duncan struck out five before departing with one out in the fifth inning.

Toby Fox and Seth Brown each doubled for the Bobcats.
