Dowagiac Director of Public Safety Steve Grinnewald reports that the Dowagiac Police Department made an arrest of a subject for a narcotics violation who was soliciting door to door within Dowagiac.

Dowagiac Police were contacted by a resident who lives on East High Street on Tuesday at approximately 4:40 p.m. The resident said that he was just contacted at his residence by a man claiming he was from Just Energy who wanted to see his utility bills. He told the subject he was not interested and the subject left walking.

Officers located the subject on Elizabeth Street in Dowagiac. They made contact with him there and began investigating the subject for soliciting without a permit. Upon speaking with the subject officers located a small amount of marijuana on him and arrested the subject for possession of marijuana. The subject was transported to the Cass County Jail where a more thorough search was conducted with another small quantity of marijuana being located on the subject there.

Dowagiac Police arrested the subject, a 36-year-old male from Detroit.  He was lodged at the Cass County jail on charges of possession of marijuana and also faces charges from the Cass County Sheriff’s Department for the marijuana located at the jail. All charges are pending authorization from the Cass County Prosecutor’s Office.

The police department is continuing to investigate the violation of city ordinance for soliciting without a permit.  Police are also coordinating with Niles Police to determine if their recent home invasion and assault is related to subjects in Dowagiac.
