Wayne D. Comstock, 62, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2014, with his family surrounding him. Wayne was born to Dr. L. David Comstock Jr. and Mary Lou Watkins on July 20, 1951, in Grand Rapids, Mich.

On May 1, 1976, he married Susie Horstman. Together they raised two sons, L. David and Jonathan Comstock, both of Dowagiac. He is also survived by three siblings, one brother and two sisters; Stephen (Dixie) Comstock of Michigan, Emily (Jill Kullmann) Comstock of Wisconsin and Martha Comstock of Mississippi, cousins Carol Dickison of St. Peters, Miss., Garry (Kathy) Elghammer of Indian Lake and David (Dawn) Elghammer of Ann Arbor. He is also survived by nieces Caitlin, Jennie and Heather, and nephews Tim and Jeff. He is preceded in death by his parents, Dave and Mary Lou Comstock.

Wayne was a lifelong resident of Dowagiac and he touched many lives in many ways. He was a graduate of the class of 1969 of Dowagiac Union High School and attended SMC, where he earned his associate’s degree.

Wayne enjoyed many a day on beautiful Indian Lake sailing his C-Scow in weekend races and regattas. He also enjoyed a round or two of golf at many of the local golf courses. Wayne enjoyed cooking and grilling and was famous for his “Wayne Burgers.”

He also enjoyed photography and many of his Facebook “friends” must certainly recall his daily picture posts. He was a regular in downtown Dowagiac on Thursday evenings in the summer to enjoy the music programs at the gazebo. He also loved playing keyboard, especially when the old tunes of the 60s were played. Wayne was a huge supporter of the Elks Lodge in Dowagiac and helped in their many projects and served as an officer for many years.

Wayne was past president of the Borgess Lee Memorial Hospital Foundation, member and PER of the Dowagiac Elks Lodge #889. He served as Mayor Pro-Tem as well as a council member for the City of Dowagiac for many years. He was an honorary fireman of the Dowagiac Fire Department, member of the Hampshire Country Club Thunderbird Golf League, past Commodore of the Indian Lake Yacht Club, board member on the Indian Lake Cemetery and past President of the Dowagiac Optimist Club. Wayne was employed by Wolverine Mutual Insurance Company for 38 years where he retired in 2010. Wayne also served on many high school class reunion committees for the “Dowagiac Class of ’69.

The family will gather with friends for a memorial visitation on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014 from 4 to 7 p.m. with a Time of Sharing from 7 to 8 p.m. at Clark Chapel and Cremation Services, 405 Center St. in Dowagiac. He has been entrusted to the Cremation Services of Southwest Michigan. Wayne will be laid to rest in the spring at Indian Lake Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Comstock family.
