Dowagiac reminds residents of snow removal ordinances

Road crews with the City of Dowagiac have been hard at work clearing roads and removing snow to make sure the roadways are kept clear for the safe passage of traffic.

This has been an ongoing effort that has taken all of their time and crews have been putting in countless hours in this task. The large amount of snow that has fallen this winter has kept crews busy and it appears as if it will continue for some time, as more significant snowfall is predicted in the future.

The Dowagiac Department of Public Safety would like to remind residents that it is a violation of Dowagiac City ordinance and Michigan state law to deposit snow on any roadway, across a roadway or on a shoulder or curb of a roadway. By doing so, it makes the clearing of the snow by road crews difficult as well as hampers emergency vehicles that may need to get down a roadway to answer an emergency call.

Residents are also reminded that there is no parking on city streets between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. from November to April. By parking vehicles on the street, snow removal becomes very difficult, as plows need to navigate around parked vehicles. With the large amount of snow that has fallen the roadways are narrow as a result. When road crews are forced to plow around parked vehicles they are unable to remove the snow that has accumulated around these vehicles and this makes it difficult for emergency vehicles and regular traffic to get around.

Snow removal throughout the city is, and will continue to be, an ongoing effort. By working together, we can make sure that our roads are kept safe for everyone.
